Should you Vote?
If you are 18 years old or older, are not currently in prison and a citizen of the United States, you can vote. That may be oversimplified but you get my drift, right?
It’s too easy.
There was a time, not too long ago when there was a test to vote. Of course Jim Crow laws in the southern part of the country screwed that up by not applying it equally. As my Mom used to tell us, “You broke it so you don’t get to play with it anymore.” Man, did they break it!
A big sarcastic “Thank you” to our scaredy-cat grandparents for making sure that we would eventually only get public officials who passed examination by people who get their information from X and TMZ.
Well, there is nothing we can do about the past. If there was, Eve wouldn’t have eaten the apple and we would still be living in the Garden of Eden.
How about a self-administered test based on the honor system to find out if you, (or a loved one) should vote.
Five simple questions:
1) Who is the current Secretary of State of the U.S.?
2) What two sides fought in the Civil War
3) What are the three branches of the Federal Government?
4) What is the “Fourth Estate?”
5) How many voting members of Congress are there?
Now, for the fun part. The next time you hear someone bloviating about current events and it is obvious that they are basing their information on something they heard a superstar YouTube influencer said to their hundreds of influencees, ask them one or two of these questions and the just laugh and laugh.
That is, of course, as long as you know the right answers.
